Abstract
This paper critiques the theology underlying the Order of the Blessing of Animals in the Collectio Rituum vis-à-vis contemporary animal ethics. It analyzes the rite’s anthropocentric framework, which emphasizes animals’ instrumental and symbolic roles within God’s salvific plan while underdeveloping their intrinsic value an dignity. While acknowledging positive theological insights, such as animals participation in creation and redemption, the study argues for a more robust, ecologically sensitive theology that better addresses ethical concerns and aligns liturgical practice with evolving Church teaching on nonhuman creatures.
