Loyola Papers is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, scholarly rigor, and ethical responsibility in theological research and publication. Loyola Papers participates in the intellectual mission of the Church while upholding internationally recognized standards of ethical academic publishing. The journal expects authors, editors, and reviewers to adhere to the principles outlined below.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

By submitting a manuscript to Loyola Papers, authors affirm that:

  • The submission is original work and has not been previously published, nor is it under consideration elsewhere.
  • All sources are properly cited and acknowledged.
  • All listed authors have made substantial contributions to the research and writing.
  • The manuscript does not contain plagiarized, fabricated, falsified, defamatory, or unlawful material.
  • Necessary permissions have been obtained for the use of copyrighted material.
  • Any conflicts of interest are fully disclosed.
  • Research involving human subjects, where applicable, complies with recognized ethical standards.

Authors are responsible for the accuracy of quotations, references, and theological claims. They bear full responsibility for the content of their published work.

Plagiarism and Misconduct

Loyola Papers does not tolerate plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct, including:

  • Verbatim copying without proper quotation and citation;
  • Close paraphrasing without attribution;
  • Self-plagiarism or redundant publication;
  • Fabrication or falsification of data;
  • Misrepresentation of authorship.

Manuscripts may be screened using plagiarism-detection tools. If misconduct is identified, the journal reserves the right to reject the submission, retract a published article, and take appropriate corrective action.

Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

Editors are responsible for:

  • Ensuring a fair, impartial, and confidential peer review process;
  • Evaluating manuscripts solely on scholarly merit, relevance, and integrity;
  • Avoiding conflicts of interest;
  • Maintaining confidentiality regarding submitted manuscripts;
  • Taking appropriate action in cases of suspected misconduct.

Editorial decisions are made independently and without discrimination based on race, gender, nationality, institutional affiliation, or theological school of thought, provided the work demonstrates scholarly integrity and respect for the Catholic theological tradition.

Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

Peer review is conducted in a double-blind manner to ensure fairness and scholarly rigor. Reviewers are expected to:

  • Provide objective, constructive, and timely evaluations;
  • Treat manuscripts as confidential documents;
  • Disclose any conflicts of interest;
  • Identify relevant published work not cited by the author;
  • Refrain from using unpublished material for personal advantage.

Conflicts of Interest

All participants in the publication process—authors, editors, and reviewers—must disclose any relationships or interests that could influence their judgment. Where a conflict exists, appropriate measures, including recusal, will be taken to ensure impartiality.

Corrections and Retractions

If significant errors or ethical concerns are discovered after publication, Loyola Papers will take appropriate action, which may include:

  • Publishing corrections or clarifications;
  • Issuing expressions of concern;
  • Retracting the article when warranted.

The journal is committed to preserving the integrity of the scholarly record.

Ecclesial Responsibility

As a journal rooted in the Catholic theological tradition, Loyola Papers encourages scholarly inquiry conducted in a spirit of intellectual honesty, ecclesial responsibility, and respectful theological dialogue. Academic freedom is exercised within the broader commitment to truth, charity, and the service of the Church and society.
