Abstract

This article reflects on the Ignatian practice of “begging for grace” in the Spiritual Exercises as an expression of spiritual poverty. It traces the Christian tradition of poverty and mendicancy from Christ and the apostles to the founders of the Mendicant Orders who influenced Ignatius of Loyola. The study then explores Ignatius’ own understanding of begging within prayer and spiritual life, offering a scriptural and theological interpretation of this practice. The article concludes with apersonal testimony illustrating how begging for grace leads to a deeper experience of God’s loving generosity.
