Abstract

Language education emphasized the importance of intercultural communicative competence among 21st century learners. This study aimed to analyze how the contents of the 28 self-learning modules contribute to the development of ICC of the senior high school students of the Department of Education in the Philippines. This study used a 46-item checklist consisting of the indicators of the four dimensions of Byram’s (1997) ICC framework. Findings showed that the modules (1) partially addressed the competences in the dimension of linguistic competence; (2) exhaustively addressed the competences in the dimensions of discourse competence and intercultural competence; and (3) did not address the competences in sociolinguistic competence. Thus, this study recommended that self- learning modules should address all the dimensions of ICC to equip learners to become effective and proficient communicators in this multicultural and multilingual world.
