Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Abstract
Excerpt: The U.P. Center for Ethnomusicology has dedicated an entire year—from January 31, 2017 to January 31, 2018—to celebrate the centenary of the birth of its founder, National Artist for Music Dr. José Montserrat Maceda. Recognized as one of the prime movers of ethnomusicology in Asia, Maceda’s lifelong work as philosopher, researcher, composer, and educator has been highly esteemed by ethnomusicologists, scholars, and artists from around the world. His particular interest in finding answers to questions regarding music led him to formulate philosophical perspectives and new theoretical constructs that addressed the structure and compositional concepts of western music, opening an alternative modern musical expression that highlights the experience and nature of communal village lives of the people of Asia.
