Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Abstract

Fernando Zóbel was one of the leading exponents of modern art in the Philippines, as a practitioner and a patron and teacher. In addition, he was also interested in printmaking. This paper is an account of this often overlooked aspect of Zóbel’s artistic career: Where and how did he learn the art? What were his efforts in promoting it in the Philippines? This is part of a larger project, “Finding Zóbel Prints.” The coverage consists of (a) Zóbel’s own works, whether these were donated by him or acquired by other means to various institutions and (b) works by other artists, Filipino or otherwise, that he donated. A survey of these prints would provide material showing his significance as artist and patron in the field of printmaking.
