Narratological Considerations in Translating Maria Magsano’s Duksay Kapalaran

Abstract

Translation requires a thorough understanding of the source text, so that it can be aptly conveyed into the target text regardless of the source and target languages. In view of translating Maria Magsano’s Pangasinan novel Duksay Kapalaran into English using foreignizing strategies, which privilege the culture, society, and history embedded in the source text over the cultural values attending the target language, the author first performs a careful reading of the novel. What is brought to the fore are the novel’s nuances and relevant attributes, specifically orality and didacticism, which Ma. Crisanta Nelmida asserts are the dominant features of the Pangasinan short story. From this reading come implications for translating the novel into English using foreignizing strategies.
