Abstract
Excerpt: Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, National Artist for Theater and professor emerita of the University of the Philippines Diliman, passed away on 29 December 2020 at the age of ninety. Born on 4 April 1930 in Binondo, Manila, she was the sixth child of Gregorio Bañez Lapeña and Paz Mercado Lirag. At an early age, she watched the senakulo with her family as well as the sarsuwela and komedya with her mother. While in high school, she had the chance to read her older siblings’ books, such as Gone with the Wind and plays by Shakespeare, and eventually became literary editor of her high school newspaper. In college, she had the opportunity to design the sets for a jazz concert and theater productions.
