Abstract
Excerpt: The program of Symphonic Rides included the works of a young multi-awarded Filipino composer and alumnus of the University of the Philippines College of Music, Jonathan Domingo (b. 1990), namely, Halinhinang Hilaga’t Timog: A Friendly Exchange (Fuga) and the second movement of Mga Musika at Tagpo sa Tinubuang Lupa, John Adams’s (b. 1947) “Short Ride in a Fast Machine,” and all four movements of one of the most moving masterpieces of Russian Romantic composer Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky’s (1840-1893) Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, op. 64. But the highlight of the evening was the performance of the technically demanding Timpani Concerto No. 1 of William Kraft (1923–2022), with Kevin Castelo as the featured soloist.
