Abstract
Excerpt: National Artist for Literature Francisco Sionil Jose has left an indelible mark on Philippine culture through his fiction, sociopolitical criticism, his cultural entrepreneurship, and for having founded the Philippine chapter of PEN International. His legacy covers a diverse array of roles such as journalist, novelist, cultural influencer, publisher, bookstore owner, and even art-gallery proprietor. His international reputation was such that when he passed away on 6 January 2022, the Straits Times of Singapore headlined him as a “Philippine literary giant” and Pulitzer Prize–winning US writer James Fallows called him “the conscience of the nation.”
