Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Abstract

This paper looks back at my professional career as a teacher and as a critic in the last fifty years. In hindsight, it was intertwined with the specificities of our history and culture. It began in the context of increasing criticism of the dominance of Western writing vis-à-vis Philippine writing, and of the interrogation of the role of literature in a dysfunctional society. The anticolonial thrust shaped the kind of teaching and scholarly activities I engaged in: the study of vernacular literature, women’s writings, Philippine popular culture, and the translation of Tagalog works for a broader readership.
