Abstract

Acknowledging religious pluralism as a reality in Asia, the Asian bishops firmly believe that conversion to Christianity is not the only path to salvation for people of other faiths. They also reaffirm that no one can be saved without participating in Jesus Christ. While the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) primarily focuses on pastoral activities rather than theological reflection, particularly Christological reflection, the Asian bishops seek to articulate Christ’s centrality and ultimate role in salvation, including for adherents of other religious traditions who do not profess the Christian faith. Drawing on various documents of the FABC, this essay presents the Asian bishops’ understanding of how Jesus Christ works for the salvation of people of other faiths through creation and the Incarnation within God’s universal design and through the universal work of the Holy Spirit. The Christ-event, inseparable from the Word, is the decisive manifestation of God and the foundation of salvation for adherents of other faiths.
