Abstract
The recent 25th anniversary of Ecclesia in Asia on November 6, 2024, underscores the need for a critical evaluation of its impact and relevance, hence the timeliness and necessity of this article. This article begins with the observation that Ecclesia in Asia primarily reflects the papal perspective rather than a genuine dialogue with Asian Churches, contrary to John Paul II’s assertion that the document is the fruit of his “encounter in dialogue” with Asian bishops. Additionally, it highlights the document’s neglect of crucial issues raised by the 1998 Synod of Bishops for Asia, especially the salvific significance of other religions, despite the FABC’s long-standing commitment to their role in God’s plan of salvation. Moreover, it criticizes the document’s limited scope, which fails to recognize that the diverse cultural, religious, and social contexts of Asian Churches necessitate a variety of theological and pastoral approaches, as well as a unique vision of Asian Christianity adapted to local needs. In conclusion, it examines the specific methodologies of evangelization employed by Asian Churches, arguing that the question is never about the “who” and the “what” but always about the “how” of the local Churches’ evangelizing mission in the continent.
