Abstract
This article examines the writings of the Church Fathers on the four Marian dogmas: the Divine Maternity, Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception, and Bodily Assumption of Mary. It shows how patristic teachings on these doctrines emerge primarily from their commentaries on Sacred Scripture, where Mary is interpreted within the broader economy of salvation. The study explores how the Fathers read the figure of Mary in the biblical text, highlighting their distinctive exegetical approaches—typological, allegorical, and theological. The article further analyzes the hermeneutical principles underlying patristic interpretation and considers their relevance for contemporary biblical studies. In particular, it argues that historical-critical exegesis can benefit from engaging patristic and medieval traditions, which read Scripture as the living Word of God within the faith of the Church. By retrieving these earlier approaches, the study proposes a more integrated method of interpretation that unites critical rigor with theological depth in understanding Mary and the Scriptures.
