Abstract
This article examines the biblical foundations of the Marian title “Solace of Migrants,” added to the Litany of Loreto by Pope Francis in 2020. It highlights two key New Testament passages: the Holy Family’s journey to Bethlehem (Lk 2:1–7) and the Flight into Egypt (Mt 2:13–15). In these narratives, Mary, together with Joseph and Jesus, is portrayed as a migrant who experiences displacement, hardship, and uncertainty in a foreign land. As such, she stands in solidarity with migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons today. The article argues that this title underscores a central pastoral priority of Pope Francis: care for migrants. Mary is presented as both Mother and model of compassion, offering solace to those in distress. Consequently, the Church is called to imitate her by providing concrete acts of charity and becoming a place of welcome and refuge, embodying God’s consoling presence in the lives of the displaced.
