Abstract

Asian religions may differ in their belief in the Spirit yet the Spirit is the same Spirit that has been present amongst Asians since creation. In Redemptoris Missio, St. John Paul II acknowledges that the Holy Spirit is active in the heart of every person and that the Spirit’s activity can also affect “society and history, peoples, cultures and religions.” The Spirit of God communicates the Word as the Christ incarnate, the same Word revealed by the Spirit to non-Christians as divine wisdom and guidance. The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of God for other faiths. In the 21st century, the Church as the Body of Christ in Asia experiences the Spirit in the following three signs: 1) Evangelii Gaudium, 2) the beatification of Matteo Ricci, and 3) the Holy Spirit being present in the ancient religions and cultures of Asia.
