Abstract
Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has made divine mercy the guiding principle of his ministry. From his earliest homilies to the proclamation of the 2015 Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Francis has consistently emphasized mercy as God’s most vital attribute. This theological focus holds deep personal significance, as reflected in his papal motto, Miserando atque Eligendo. This essay explores the personal, spiritual, and pastoral influences that shaped Francis’s devotion to mercy throughout his journey as a Christian, Jesuit, priest, and bishop, while presenting the core of his papal teachings on the subject.
