Abstract

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines describes the ecological crisis as the "ultimate pro-life issues." Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis have all emphasized that environmental degradation and human life are inseparably linked, disproportionately affecting the vulnerable. This essay examines the crisis through Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s "consistent ethic of life" (CEL), arguing that it must expand to incorporate ecological concerns. By bridging CEL with Pope Francis’s "integral ecology," the author surveys climate challenges and reframes the CEL to be more ecologically sensitive, ultimately offering actionable ways in which this expanded moral vision can help protect our common home.
