Abstract
This paper retraces the evolution of the Second Vatican Council’s decree restoring the catechumenate and examines the discussions that took place at various stages of its drafting. It demonstrates that this restoration was necessitated by the Church's core missionary thrust, as outlined in Ad Gentes. Through this investigation, the study highlights a threefold vision for Christian formation established by the Council Fathers: first, that Christians are born into the communion of the Church; second, that their faith-life is guided toward maturity within the Christian community through an inculturated itinerary of faith known as catechesis; and third, that being evangelized through catechesis—utilizing Sacred Scripture, tradition, the liturgy, the magisterium, and the life of the Church—they are ultimately sent forth into the world to act as evangelizers in their own right.
