Art as Fulfillment of the Will: A Review of a Work of Gerald “G.I.” Pongase
Abstract
English Abstract
In this article, Paredes observes how art in Cebu remains tied to the tradition of realism. There is still a lack of studies on abstract art and abstract expressionism, which continue to rely on formalism. Paredes aims to analyze the abstract artwork of Gerald Ismael “G.I.” Pongase using the aesthetics of Arthur Schopenhauer, particularly his concept of the “will.” In his A Moment of Patience in a Moment of Anger (2019), Pongase demonstrates the unity of body, mind, and nature in response to the movement of the will. Paredes describes Pongase’s use of smudges, lines, and layered anatomical forms to free those who will view his artwork to come up with their own interpretations. This kind of abstraction shows that the movement of the body and the will are one, expressing the shared emotion of humanity. Ultimately, Paredes connects Schopenhauer’s philosophy to Eastern metaphysics, which values process and the spiritual unity of things.
