English Abstract
Spoken word poetry is by no means a recent phenomenon, either as a performance or as a text, within the broader history of art and literature. In fact, it may be argued that the ways of engaging with and interpreting artistic works inevitably shift with the passage of time. Viewed in this light, spoken word poetry in the Philippines may be seen as a form that enriches the oral tradition by continually adapting to the demands of the contemporary moment. This critical paper thus seeks to trace the evolution and lived experience of spoken word poetry throughout its historical trajectory. In doing so, it also aims to illustrate how the form responds to shifting social contexts and conditions. Of particular importance is the medium’s transition to online platforms during the pandemic, and the ways in which artists adjusted to and negotiated this new performance space. Ultimately, this study underscores that any act of breaking, experimenting with, or creating new artistic forms necessitates a profound understanding of the traditions and roots from which they emerge.
