Strangers in Negros and Panay: The Artof Aeson Baldevia and Tappei Noguchi

Abstract

Umiinog ang sanaysay na ito sa penomeno ng pagiging estranghero bilang paksa ng dalawang anyo ng kontemporanyong sining: ang makalipunang pakikisangkot sa sining (socially engaged art) at makasining na panggagalugad (art exploration). Laman ng talakay ang proyektong telephone booth para sa iba’t ibang indibidwal ng Filipinong artista na si Aeson Baldevia mula sa eksibisyon niyang Chance Encounters na itinampok sa Orange Project sa lungsod ng Bacolod sa isla ng Negros. Tatalakayin din ang paglibot ng Hapones na artista na si Tappei Noguchi sa isla ng Panay na pinaksa ng eksibisyong Panay Walk sa Tabai Coffee + Test Kitchen sa lungsod ng Roxas. Sa paglalahad ng a) proseso ng paglikha ng sining ng bawat artista at b) katas nitong simbolikong output sa mga eksibisyon, sinuri ng may-akda ang iba’t ibang antas ng komprontasyon ng estranghero sa pangkat. Sa huli, humahantong ang pagbabalangkas ng panlipunang ugnayan ng estrangherong artista sa iba sa pagbubuo ng mga ideang nagpapakahulugan sa pagiging isang tao sa kasalukuyan.

English Abstract

This essay revolves around the phenomenon of being a stranger as a subject of two forms of contemporary art: socially engaged art and art exploration. Discussion includes the telephone booth project dedicated to various individuals by Filipino artist Aeson Baldevia from his exhibition Chance Encounters staged in Orange Project in Bacolod City, Negros Island. The circumnavigation of Panay Island by Japanese artist Tappei Noguchi as the highlight of his exhibition Panay Walk in Tabai Coffee + Test Kitchen in Roxas City will also be discussed. Through an analysis of the a) process of artmaking of both artists and the b) resultant symbolic output from the exhibitions, the author examined varied levels of confrontation of the stranger to the group. In the end, the reconfiguration of the social connection of the stranger-artist to others leads to the development of ideas on what it means to be a human today.
