Abstract
The complexity of sustainability issues requires leadership that can help transform the organization. Much has been written about sustainability leadership, such as its characteristics, models, frameworks, and practice. This paper reviews the literature on sustainability leadership as it has evolved for business organizations. The review uses a morphogenetic approach (Archer, 2020) to show how the literature describes three phases of sustainability leadership, namely, the conditioning that sets the stage for this type of leadership, the social interaction of sustainability leaders, and sustainability transformation in the organization. To sustain the transformation, it is important to develop future sustainability leaders with the sustainability mindset and competencies.
