Abstract

This chapter examines the discourses of selected literary texts found in government-issued English Language teaching textbooks in the Philippines. Its concern is examining how textbooks draw on Literature to project, normalize, and disseminate macro-conforming identities (Mahboob, 2015) that are implicated in ‘imagining the nation’ (Anderson, 1983). Studying the discourse configurations of these texts can reveal what purpose(s) Literature fulfils while also revealing what identities are valued. This study is a step towards investigating how textbooks are instrumental in affirming or challenging hegemony. It is also a critical examination of the role of Literature in national curriculum design.
