Beyond CSR-Building a Culture of Sustainability in Philippine Organizations

Abstract
This study examines the practices and initiatives of business organizations in building a culture of sustainability. The CREATE framework for culture-building was utilized as a guide in understanding the culture-building strategies. It utilized a multicase study approach, analyzing data from seven Philippine organizations chosen by a panel of experts on organization sustainability. The seven companies have integrated sustainability practices in their organizational cultures and systems, and their sustainability initiatives are aligned to the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Reflexive thematic analysis was conducted on the interviews and sustainability reports of the companies. Results yielded several strategies under each of the CREATE dimensions that support the development of a sustainability culture in Philippine organizations. Key findings that were noted included tailor-fitting the methods and strategies of Communicating the value of sustainability; leaders serving as Role models by forming committees for sustainability initiatives; Engaging employees by encouraging collaboration within the organization; Aligning organizational key performance indicators (KPIs) and individual goals to sustainability; providing general and specialized sustainability Training; and Evaluating and reporting about sustainability efforts. The study contributes to the literature by providing a nuanced examination of culture-building strategies in organizations. It highlights strategies on how to design and implement a holistic approach to building a sustainability culture.
