Abstract

This study uses Opp’s (2009) Structural-Cognitive Model (SCM), a synthesis of the dominant approaches in the social movement field, to explain the formation of a Philippine social movement coalition as a case study. Through the example of the Kalipunan ng mga Kilusang Masa, a broad, multisectoral coalition composed of various Philippine social movements, the study argues that a commonly-shared external threat, strong interpersonal ties, convergence of frames of meaning and incentives to participate, as well as a “flexible” coalition structure are crucial factors to ensure the successful formation of a social movement coalition across varying political, ideological, and organizational differences.
