Abstract
Envy is mostly perceived as a negative emotion that arises when an individual engages in a social upward comparison. However, recent studies show the existence of benign envy that can trigger an individual to feel motivated to move upward and improve oneself to equal the status or possession of the envied person. This study aimed to identify and describe the existing relationship between dispositional envy and achievement motivation and establish its implication in the practice of guidance and counseling. A total of 169 senior high school students completed the Benign and Malicious Envy Scale (Lange & Crusius, 2015) and Achievement Motivation Scale- Revised (Lang & Fries, 2006) through an online version of the questionnaire. The researcher analyzed the results using Pearson’s correlation and it was found that dispositional benign envy has weak positive correlation with hope for success which indicates that both variables can describe the motivational tendencies of the participants toward achieving their goals. Dispositional benign envy was also found to have a weak negative correlation with fear of failure. Similarly, dispositional malicious envy has a weak positive correlation with fear of failure which indicates that the motivational dynamics of students towards avoiding failure can be described by their experience of malicious envy. Moreover, dispositional malicious envy was found to have a weak negative correlation with hope for success. In conclusion, culture may have been an important factor to understand how students experience and react to envy. Nonetheless, this study has provided evidence that shows the existing relationship of dispositional envy and achievement motivation that brings new insight for guidance counselors as they improve and develop their services to ensure the holistic development of students.
