Abstract

One of the major challenges that teachers had to face in recent history was to teach amidst a global pandemic. With most of the teaching done via remote learning, the digital divide among learners have become more apparent since access to learning resources, mostly online, spells an advantage. Learners in a country that has one of the slowest and most expensive internet in Asia struggles to find competent yet affordable learning resources. The use of open educational resources (OER) has been increasingly explored to address such need for free, equitable yet credible learning content. Consequently, the Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC), along with recent studies have demonstrated a mobile cloud architecture for offline content distribution as an attempt to alleviate the problem of access in situations where there is minimal to no existing internet infrastructure. This paper is predicated on the development of worthwhile learning materials in Science using open education resources while capitalizing on existing mobile cloud technology to build an offline network for a community-based use case. This study used a mixed method approach, pre-experimental design to primarily investigate OER awareness, capacity and adoption tendencies of Science teachers as well as their mobile learning perception and acceptance. Results were used to develop learning materials facilitated in a proposed mobile cloud network architecture that acted as community learning hub that provided supplemental content. The study also explored other uses cases derived from the existing mobile cloud network to demonstrate synchronous learning situations and other community-based remote learning modalities.
