Abstract
Universities, or Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), can help achieve sustainable future through their sustainability strategies. Literature has also shown that stakeholder engagement is beneficial in the development and implementation of these sustainability strategies. This study investigates the role that stakeholders played in the development and implementation of various HEI sustainability initiatives, particularly in the Bicol region, which can benefit from these because its economy is heavily dependent on agriculture and tourism, which are impacted by sustainability challenges and because of its constant exposure to extreme weather and geohazards. The research used qualitative methods. Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions was used to interview eight HEI representatives involved with the HEI’s sustainability initiatives. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings show that differences in the HEIs’ notions of sustainability influence their approach in developing strategies. The HEIs involves the stakeholder in all processes from planning to implementation and monitoring and evaluation of the initiatives, and even in the crafting of the policy guidelines. The study also found that when stakeholder engagement was done properly, it will result in stakeholder empowerment in the different pillars of sustainability such as social, environmental, and economic.
