Abstract
Sustainability is a global concern that requires interdisciplinary cooperation for systemic solutions. While business leaders seek to embed sustainability into their organizational culture, virtual collaboration, which continues to increase in adoption, creates specific challenges in this significant task. Although extant literature explores how sustainability may be integrated into corporate culture, a gap exists regarding this process in online teams. This study explores how leaders embed sustainability into organizational culture in virtual contexts. Using a thematic analysis on data gathered from interviews with 12 participants, this study suggests that leaders exhibit particular behaviors in this undertaking, including recognizing challenges, engaging employees, role modeling, crafting strategy and planning, monitoring and assessing performance, developing partnerships and activating internal communities, and aligning one’s own personal values with those of the organization. These may be further categorized into intrapersonal, interpersonal and functional behaviors that leaders demonstrate to incorporate sustainability into organizational culture in online contexts.
