Abstract
Academic institutions are confronted with challenges brought by the shifting academic landscape which necessitate the need to develop strategic leadership at all levels in the form of shared leadership. As such, perception of leadership shifts from the individual leader to the contribution of the collective in the leadership process. This study aimed to understand the nature and dynamics of shared leadership through the experiences of academic departments in a non- Western context using mixed method design. It was revealed that shared leadership is manifested through behaviors that espouse a supportive and cordial team environment, encourage healthy dialogues, engage and empower the team towards performance, and by serving as mentors and role models to team members. It surfaced enablers and barriers shaped by organizational and cultural factors that could be impediments without proper intervention. The study also surfaced outcomes beyond enhanced performance such as attitudinal outcomes and team learning. Implications to research and practice are discussed.
