Abstract

This study used an adaptation of the Seven Levels of Reflectivity model to develop a Reflective Practice Journal for novice counselors. The Journal guided self-reflection in different aspects of the counseling experience; namely, practicing self-awareness and reflecting on emotions, behavior, values, concepts, inclinations and worldviews. A pilot run of the Journal was conducted with two supervising psychologists and five novice counselor-trainees, who assessed the material based on content, structure and presentation. The study analyzed the quantitative feedback using mean ratings and the qualitative feedback using deductive thematic analysis. Results showed that the Journal was considered as an engaging and useful tool in improving the reflective practice of novice counselors. Participants found the Journal helpful in making sense of their counseling experiences and in developing a deeper understanding of themselves as counselors. The study thus recommended the implementation of the Journal for UGAT counselor-trainees, as well as the possibility of distributing and testing it with a wider audience of novice counselors.
