Abstract

The Church is part of the world and shares in its concerns. It is impossible to ignore that the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor is increasingly dire. Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, together with works by ecological theologians, offers Christians valuable insight into how living ecologically fits into the very heart of Christian belief and practice. In the encyclical, he calls for educators to develop an ecological ethics and spirituality to combat the myths of modernity grounded in a utilitarian mindset. But to what extent are Laudato Si’s key ideas being incorporated into religious education? Making use of Cardinal Joseph Cardijn’s See–Judge–Act method of analysis as its conceptual framework, this study investigates the extent to which the Ateneo de Manila Grade 10 course on Christian Morality educates students to understand Laudato Si’s key ideas and offers teachers a supplementary material to improve this incorporation. This supplementary material includes a summary of theological and pedagogical guidelines on the topic that can be useful for developing ecological catechesis, and three lesson plans that apply these guidelines to teaching the present Grade 10 CLE course.
