Abstract

This study explores the question of how gender has been produced within and between online and offline spaces through an analysis of the experiences of queer Filipinos who inhabit them. Gender has long been theorized as a production that has led to the persecution of persons who are deemed queer. However, the factors that lead to its normalization merit further exploration especially with changing social environments. This includes complications brought about by the intersections of class and race and the recent rise of online space. The study’s findings indicate that gender is indeed a production because each person’s identity is unique to their particular circumstances, that queer spaces can be formed anywhere as disruptions against the production of gender in heteronormative space, that the similarities and differences between online and offline spaces have significant effects on the gendered experiences of their inhabitants, and that productions such as gender only hold power when people hold on to them.
