Abstract
The study investigates how language policies and practices shape college students’ attitudes towards the use of the local languages in the English classroom in Western Mindanao. Furthermore, it explores how students use their local languages and the reasons for their uses in different situations in the English classroom. This also examines insights into how students created their own cultural models, and how these models influenced the use of local languages in English classroom realities. Identifying students’ cultural models and how and why they used them are important inquiries to further acknowledge students’ voices in the English classroom and to identify distinctions of how each local language was used as their cultural model.
The data gathered from classroom observations and individual interviews were analyzed to relate how policies and practices shape college students’ attitude on local language use and to identify how and why students use them in various instances in the English classroom setting. The study shows that students’ use of local languages in an English classroom is frequent and employed in different situations in the classroom. Although English shows to be the language of academic discussion, the local languages such as Tausug, Chabacano, and Bisaya are employed as students’ cultural models for use as the languages of authority, power, solidarity, group identity, attachment, and polite conversation. Filipino as the lingua France in the research locale serves as the language of accommodation in the English classroom. Furthermore, it reveals that college students in this context have positive attitudes towards local language use in the English classroom in Western Mindanao.
