Abstract
As School A undergoes changes in its academic leadership structure and developments in its curriculum, the need for a system for supervising class instruction in terms of developing teaching-learning strategies arises. This study uses Edwin Locke’s Goal Setting Theory as the framework for such a supervision program. The Goal Setting Theory states that effective goal setting and successful task performance are contingent on four key aspects: the clarity of the goal, the challenge of the goal, commitment to the task, and feedback on task performance. This study posits that the supervision of class instruction can be anchored on the four key aspects of effective goal setting.
This qualitative study explored the use of goal setting as a framework for supervision of instruction through the design and testing of a formal supervision program structured around the four key aspects of effective goal setting and the collection and analysis of data from the supervision process as well as feedback on the program from the participants. Three supervisors and four teachers participated in the supervision program which consisted of six cycles of formal class observations. Data from the post-observation conferences and focus group discussions was analyzed to explore the participants’ experience of the supervision program.
The study found that the four key aspects of effective goal setting proposed by the Goal Setting Theory can help identify areas of focus in supervising instruction towards reinforcing the strengths of teachers and addressing their weaknesses through the identification of short term improvement goals. This study showed that Goal Clarity in teaching involves setting short-term and long-term learning outcomes; Challenge and
