Abstract

Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face challenges “adulting” or navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood. This study explored the experiences of adulting for High Functioning Filipino adults with ASD through a multiple case study. Thematic analysis was conducted on interviews of seven case participants, each together with additional interviews done with an intimate relative or friend as part of their case. The persons with ASD showed themes of developing self-mastery over their symptoms, navigating social communication obstacles, and of building independent living as persons with ASD. Based on the findings the study recommends further research on self-mastery and awareness of communication weaknesses in the practice of cognitive therapy for persons with ASD, the role of family and close relationships for persons with ASD and how these interact with the need for becoming more independent and the implications this has for family therapy, as well as the role of adults with ASD in being active advocates helping others with ASD in need of interventions and treatment.
