Abstract

This pilot study evaluates the effectiveness and acceptability of the Pag-Alaga sa Sarili at sa Mag-Anak (Pag-ASA) Positive Parenting Program, designed for Filipino parents of teens attending public high schools. The program sought to improve the quality of parent-teen relationships by introducing emotion regulation and positive parenting skills to help parents navigate the various developmental needs and challenges their teens experience. Skills were taught to parents (n = 31, 93.5% women) in a 10-week series of an average of 2-hour sessions that met once a week. A mixed methods repeated measurement within-group design was used to assess and integrate using Sexton et al.’s (2011) guidelines for evaluating couple and family treatments, outcomes in parent, teen, and dyad functioning, and a cost-benefit analysis of the community implementation of the program. Findings demonstrate that the Pag-ASA enacted favorable changes in parents’ ability to manage their emotions in distressing situations, anticipatory knowledge about their teens’ needs and developmental characteristics, and awareness of alternative effective parenting strategies. Focus group responses indicate that parents accessed peer support in the sessions, and found the program helpful and highly acceptable. Reevaluations and methods to undertake revisions to the program content, design, delivery, and further research are recommended.
