Abstract

The Routledge Handbook of Autocratization in Southeast Asia examines how global and domestic forces of autocratization affect regional and local politics, analyzing how the interactions of international and domestic factors influence actors and institutions in both democracies and autocracies across the region. Bringing together local and international scholars across 28 chapters organized into three sections, the Handbook cross-examines regional trends and provides an insider view of the causes and effects of autocratization in a region characterized by diverse experiences with decolonization, state-building, and political developments. Part I explores structural, international, socio-political, technological, and ideological causal factors of autocratization, including China's influence, digital authoritarianism, polarization, religion, and military coups. Part II delivers a comparative analysis of the consequences of autocratization on key actors and democratic institutions, evaluating judicial independence, party systems, ethnic minorities, gender equality, media and academic freedoms, and ASEAN. Part III provides detailed case studies of autocratic consolidation and pushback in all nation-states in ASEAN as well as Timor-Leste. The volume serves as a comprehensive reference work analyzing how domestic actors and democratic institutions withstand global and regional forces of autocratization.
