Abstract
This paper is an initial attempt to view an English-Chinese bilingual mathematics program in the Philippines from a sociological standpoint, by responding to the critical question of whether the program is delivering the value it envisions to impart (e.g., excellence in mathematics, opportunities to learn Chinese languages). Conversations with former students in the program, in addition to reflexive notes from the lead author, were analyzed using Bourdieu’s (1990) conceptual tools of habitus, field, and capital. Results show promise that most participants have an aligned sense of value with the program. Nevertheless, it was also found that there are voices who question aspects of the program and the value it actually provides.
