Abstract
This chapter explores facilitating students’ ownership of English through practices that embrace pluralist and critical approaches to English language teaching (ELT), such as World Englishes, multilingualism, translanguaging, and critical pedagogy. It analyzes case studies of teachers in primary and higher education institutions who integrated these approaches into their practices. The teachers’ exposure to a wide range of ELT approaches resulted from their graduate school training. They also reported that adopting such approaches has inspired students to own their English. The chapter concludes by identifying steps to reframing ELT in the country and offering recommendations that empower multilingual students and teachers.
