Abstract

This paper analyses how various Philippine National Language dictionaries (1950 to 2000) treated the verb root. The problem arises on the assumptions of some linguists that verbs in Tagalog, being the basis of the national language, are derived from the precategorical root through affixes or affixation. From this gap, this paper will analyze the approaches and methods used by various dictionaries in assigning parts of speech (POS) on roots indicating manner of action, motion, or situation, so as the description of behavior and manner of defining these entries.
