Abstract
There is a rich articulation about fannishness in the Filipino context. Whether it exists as part of an academic study or embedded in more popular forms of media such as comics, radio, television or film, there is ample space dedicated to highlight fans and discuss the wider culture of fandom they are actively involved in. Using research articles and narratives that offer descriptions and analysis of fans, the essay will attempt to present a preliminary inquiry into the intersection of fandom and social class. Since social and economic status are categories that are not given enough attention in the field of Fan Studies, which is admittedly dominated by gender perspectives even if it does respond to the call to tap race as a lens of analysis, this paper will look at the interesting context of Filipino fans and the complex forms of Filipino fandom as a possible source of rich data that can fill an often overlooked gap in the field. Providing numerous examples of how fans escape, reclaim, and challenge issues of class, the research aims to further push the boundaries of the field of Fan Studies that recognizes the importance of inclusive and plural forms of fan representations.
