Abstract

The Philippines is a major origin country of overseas migrants. Filipinos scattered in over 220 countries currently number to 9.4 million. The country has greatly benefited from the billion dollar remittances sent by Filipinos working overseas. The situation then gives opportunities for entrepreneurship, since entrepreneurship is among the desired means by overseas Filipinos and their families in the Philippines to stretch their exponential incomes coming from abroad. But how do overseas Filipinos and their families handle their micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) given the monetary and nonmonetary resources that they have? As well, how do these migrant entrepreneurs face off with existing business conditions? These are what this case study and policy research strived to determine, in answer to the inclusion of overseas Filipinos in the 2011 - 2016 MSME Development Plan of the Department of Trade and Industry.
