Abstract

Broodstock management and larval production in finfish are amongst the most challenging tasks in fish farms since the quality of the spawnings and offspring directly impact subsequent steps of fish farming. Within this context, diet plays a key role in supporting gonad development and maturation, as well as guaranteeing the proper quality of the oocytes that support embryo development during embryogenesis and after hatching along the lecithotrophic stage. Similarly, diet, coupled with zootechnical issues, plays a cornerstone in the success of the larval-rearing process, since it is critical to match the larval nutritional requirements with their stage of development and rearing procedures during this critical, fast-growing, and intense period of morphogenesis. Considering these issues, the current book chapter aims to present a synthesis of the state-of-the-art nutritional requirements in terms of macro- and micronutrients for broodfish and larvae of different finfish species, paying special attention to their reproductive and ecological guilds. Furthermore, the focus is also placed on the identification of current gaps of knowledge regarding broodstock and larval nutrition, and how, through innovative and holistic approaches, the aquaculture industry may benefit by designing more performant and sustainable aquafeeds.
