Abstract
Asia stands as the predominant contributor to the global aquaculture industry. Among the nations in this region, Indonesia and the Philippines hold substantial roles in shaping both regional and global aquaculture production. Much like their Southeast Asian counterparts, these two nations employ a diverse array of ingredients in the formulation of their aquafeeds, encompassing terrestrial and aquatic plants and byproducts, live feeds, as well as terrestrial and aquatic animals and their byproducts. Nevertheless, fishmeal and fish oil continue to maintain their status as the conventional and most widely utilized sources of protein and lipids in aquafeeds. In recent years, there has been an escalating awareness, interest, and advocacy for the exploration of sustainable and alternative ingredients in aquafeed formulation. The aim is to reduce dependence on wild-caught fisheries for the production of fishmeal and fish oil, in alignment with the global sustainability agenda. This book chapter provides an insightful overview of the current state of aquaculture in the Southeast Asian region, with a particular focus on two pivotal aquaculture-producing nations, Indonesia and the Philippines. The chapter comprehensively examines established local plant-, animal-, and microbe-derived ingredients employed as substitutes for traditional fishmeal and fish oil in aquafeed formulations. These substitutes are evaluated in terms of their nutritional profiles, practical applications, optimal dietary incorporation levels, and inherent limitations as components of aquafeeds for commonly cultured fish and crustacean species in the two nations. Furthermore, this chapter delves into the exploration of emerging, unconventional, and prospective aquafeed ingredients, assessing their potential utility within the aquaculture industry.
