Abstract
Karangrejo Village in Magelang District, Central Java Province, Indonesia, is synonymous with rural areas for recreation, where one relaxes to enjoy Borobudur temple and also delves into culture. This type of tourism is growing because of its potential to generate economic opportunities, preserve cultural heritage, and conserve natural resources while empowering local communities. Tourism offers potential for economic development by creating employment opportunities and generating income for rural residents through various tourism-related activities. Using a constructivism perspective, this qualitative research aims to determine community resilience to environmental exploitation and to explore the benefits of rural tourism development for the local community through Niklas Luhmann’s comprehensive social system review. This research reveals the occurrence of environmental exploitation caused by the vulnerability of the evolved farming community to the complexity of the tourism environment. Luhmann’s social systems theory provides a new perspective on the implementation of technical solutions in creating welfare and facing sustainability challenges. Village stakeholders have made efforts to develop community-based tourism (CBT) to build resilience. However, careful planning, community involvement, and adherence to sustainable tourism principles are required.
