Abstract
This essay introduces the second installment of the Forum Kritika on “Waves of Emotion: Theorizing Archipelagic Affects,” which gathers a further set of essays drawn from the Critical Island Studies Colloquium held at the University of Macau in April 2024. Taking its cue from the Forum’s own two-issue span, it proposes that the installments be read, as the first issue asked, archipelagically, as two islands of essays tethered rather than fused, and it theorizes the relation between them as a (re)turn, modeled on the wave that returns only by turning and on the psychoanalytic time of après coup. Where the first introduction turned to Nick Joaquin’s “The Summer Solstice” to think affect spatially, this one turns to “Doña Jerónima” to think it temporally. Forgoing synthesis once more, the introduction sets beside one another essays that drift from various waters, the South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, the Java Sea, each tracing how feeling, suppressed or deferred, comes back on the tide, the same and not the same.
