English Title

HORI7ON and the Promise of Post-P-pop

Abstract

English Abstract

The present era of hyphenated identity saw the founding of HORI7ON (호라이즌), the first Filipino boy band that debuted in South Korea on 24 July 2023. Members of the group include Jeromy Batac, Marcus Cabais, Kyler Chua, Vinci Malizon, Reyster Yton, Kim Ng, and Winston Pineda. They climbed to the top seven out of the sixty-two contestants of the survival competition series Dream Maker, which aired on A2Z and Kapamilya Channel—on cable and satellite TV, Facebook, and YouTube— from 19 November 2022 to 12 February 2023. When ABS-CBN and South Korean entities MLD Entertainment and KAMP Global signed the contract to launch Dream Maker, a future G-pop or Global Pop group was being marketed, and not a K-pop or Korean Pop group. Nonetheless, some fans of P-pop or Pinoy Pop ridicule HORI7ON, since HORI7ON is supposedly not a P-pop group, and they should not have even performed at the Pinoy Pop Convention and Concert (PPOPCON) in July 2023. This paper will try to analyze the formation and survival of HORI7ON as an extension of Hallyu or Korean Wave in the postcolonial condition of the Philippines. Local perceptions on P-pop will be identified and compared to the concepts of K-pop and G-pop, to inform if the group manifests the possibility of a new phenomenon that may as well be called “post-P-pop.”
