Abstract
This chapter discusses how political; social; and cultural factors shape; and are affected by; the process of regional integration. It begins by examining the European project; elaborating on both the theoretical and empirical knowledge that is relevant to understand the region. The focus then shifts to Southeast Asia; which can be described as having a somewhat different trajectory from its European counterpart.
